BARCELONA VS CHELSEA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2009|THE UNTOLD STORY

WAS BARCELONA-CHELSEA 2009 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MATCH A ROBBERY?

Let's talk about the infamous champions league match between FC Barcelona and Chelsea FC. Everyone's familiar with the English version of the story but only a few talks about the Spanish version.

BARCELONA VS CHELSEA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2009|THE UNTOLD STORY

Barcelona and Chelsea, what's the first thing that comes to your mind when you see these two words in a same sentence?

Robbery?Uefalona?

Well, you are not alone. But you have to realize that you should not blindly believe everything that you hear on the internet.
I'm not here to tell you that it was a fair match, but before placing the blame on Barcelona for "match-fixing" and calling Barcelona's victory "undeserved " you should know the facts.

Was it a Robbery? Did Barcelona really deserve to go into the finals?

Everyone always talks about the second leg in Stamford bridge. Only a few talks about the refereeing mistakes in the first leg. In fact, nobody knows about those mistakes and oh boy, they were plenty.
The first leg took place in Barcelona's home ground Camp Nou on the 28th of April. The match referee was Wolfgang stark from Germany. To summarise the game Barca had possession over the ball throughout the entire match like always but failed to create chances because of Chelsea's well-organized defense.

However, both teams got enough goalscoring opportunities but both the goalkeepers stepped up and deprived the teams of scoring goals. Surprisingly in this match, Barcelona was the only victim to the refereeing mistake in the match

  1. OFFSIDE CALL ON ETO

Barcelona was having a quick counter, Thierry Henry passed the ball to Iniesta who then passed the ball to Samuel Eto'o who got the ball and ran past two Chelsea defenders. But linesman raised the flag before he came one on one with the goalkeeper Peter Cech.If it wasn't for the linesman anything would've happened.

  2. PENALTY AGAINST BOSINGWA

It was the 74th minute when Henry opened up space with a pass to Eto who in turn passed it back to Henry inside the Penalty Box who was then pulled by Bosingwa to the ground. This was the most obvious penalty. Bosingwa grabbed Henry's shirt that too from the back. But Wolfgang stark was having absolutely nothing.

  3. BALLACK FOUL

Ballack got the yellow card in the 28th minute then in the 84th minute he hit Iniesta in the face while he was trying to get into the penalty box. If Iniesta had made it to the penalty box the results of the match could've been different.

The second leg took place in Chelsea's home ground on the 6th of May and the referee was Tom Hennin Overbo. This was the infamous match that gave Barca certain names like Uefalona, Refereelona, etc.
When you look at the stats you can see that Barcelona had more possession(71%) over the ball. Although Barcelona only had one shot on target because of Chelsea's defensive approach to the game. On the other side, Chelsea had 4 shots on target as they depended more on counter-attacks.

Both teams suffered from refereeing mistakes so first I will talk about Barcelona and then jump to Chelse just to avoid confusion.
  1. BALLACK'S HANDBALL

Messi was entering the penalty box from the right side and came one on one with Ballack.
Ballack tried to clear it but while doing so the ball hit Ballack's own hand and then came down. This was a clear penalty to Barcelona, but the thing is that Messi didn't appeal for it.

  2. RED CARD ON ABIDAL

In the 65th minute, Peter Cech kicked the ball and the ball went past all the players on to Barcelona's goalpost. Nicholas Anelka was running for the ball only followed by Eric Abidal. When he was nearing the D Box Anelka's own feet stumbled with each other and fell down. You can clearly see that there was no contact between Anelka and Abidal. But the referee gave the RED CARD. This left Barcelona with only 10 men for the rest of the match.

  3. DROGBA FOUL

This was before the Abidal incident. Pique and Droba were both jumping at the same time to take an airball and while jumping Drogba hit pique in the guts. It was clearly intentional, Drogba bent his knees while jumping even though there was no need for it.

The blues spend most of the time appealing for a penalty, they deserved it but the referees failed them. Let's have a look at the Chelsea penalties:
  1. FOUL ON DROGBA

On the 26th minute, Drogba got a one on one chance with the goalkeeper but he was pulled back by Abidal by the shirt and he fell down. This was a clear foul but the referee misjudged the situation and walked away as Valdes took possession of the ball.

  2. PIQUE HANDBALL

Nicholas Anelka was approaching the Penalty box with the ball and when he tried to pass it landed on pique's hand which was already out. Even though Pique's hand was already out it can still be considered a penalty because if it wasn't for the handball intervention anything would've happened.

  3. ETO HANDBALL

It was the last minute of the game. Chelsea got a Corner and Lampard took it. Peter Cech headed the ball and then Ballack shot the deflected ball to the goal but it got hit on Eto's hand. Well, not exactly the hand but near the armpit. The catch is that it was completely Unintentional Eto turned before the ball was shot. There was no way it was deliberate.

After the last handball appeal, the full time whistled was blown and FC Barcelona sealed their victory. The whole of Chelsea block was furious and some players had few exchanges of words with the referee. Didier Drogba was given a yellow card for arguing with the referee.

Now you may have understood that Chelsea was not the only team who was affected by refereeing mistakes. Both teams had their share of struggles but we only hear about how Chelsea got robbed. There are two reasons for that, one is Tactics and the other is Media.
When you see the highlights you may think that Chelsea was in control but when you analyze the stats you will realize that Chelsea was defending the whole time. They parked the bus and tried to defend both physically and mentally

ENGLISH MEDIA MANIPULATION.

England is a big political superpower and its media can easily spread false information. Both teams had to struggle because of the referring mistakes but the English media made it look as though Barcelona robbed Chelsea of the Champions League trophy. Mistakes against Barcelona was selectively ignored to make Chelsea look like victims of a huge robbery.

English media were gutted and as always furious it was easy for them to place the blame on Barcelona for covering up their inability to win. After reading the false news spread by the media, fans who even watched both matches forgot about Mistakes against their opponents. Chelsea fans unintentionally played the victim card. It is in human nature to place the blame on something or someone when something goes wrong and that's what Chelsea fans did.

It's not the first time the English Media did something like this. They made the fans play the same victim card when they lost to Portugal in the world cup Quarterfinals. In 2006 their victim was none other than Cristiano Ronaldo.
I've written an article about it Click here to read about it.

This match is still a black mark in the history of FC Barcelona. It was in fact a Robbery but it wasn't Barcelona who Robbed but the match officials. It was a mistake. After many years Overbo admitted that it was not one of his best days and acknowledged his mistakes.

That match was a disgrace to the game and to the fans but it was not Barcelona's fault.
